Meet the little family behind the pigs - Shauna is the heart and visionary behind Marin County Rescue Pigs. She's always cared deeply about animals and has spent the majority of her life working with rescue dogs, building a strong foundation for animal care and rehabilitation. Spencer is the support and muscle behind the mission. His background in project management helps turn Shauna's dreams and visions into action, and keeps things running smoothly.
Together, with their young son, they are building a special space that's not just a safe haven for pigs, but also a place where the community can come together to connect with animals - a place where people and pigs meet in harmony.
How it Started
Their story begins in 2022, when the two Marin County natives were living in San Geronimo with their two rescue dogs. Shauna came across a Craigslist ad for piglets and couldn't bare the thought of them ending up in the wrong hands. She knew she had to act fast, having seen what often happens to animals given away online from her experience in dog rescue. Spencer agreed, and a couple hours later, they were driving home with two tiny pigs - Simon and Pete - having no plan other than to keep them safe. Little did they know that one spontaneous decision would change the trajectory of their lives.
They knew nothing about pig care at the time, but learned as they went. Pete and Simon showed them how intelligent, sensitive, and emotionally complex pigs really are, and the piglets became beloved members of the family. A few months later, they welcomed a baby boy, who the pigs instantly adored. However, joy and excitment turned to heartbreak when Pete suddenly became ill and passed away. Simon grieved deeply, further showing them how pigs experience emotions every bit as real and complex as our own.
Wanting Simon to have pig companionship, Shauna reluctantly looked into the option of rehoming him. She wanted to make sure he went to a loving family or ranch where he would be cared for as a pet. That is when she discovered the lack of safe, caring homes for these animals. After realizing the overwhelming need for pig rescues and sanctuaries, she became determined to be part of the solution rather than the problem. She connected with the owner of PigLuvCo - a wonderful organization located in Valley Springs - and adopted Rusty. This visit is ultimately what inspired her to expand her rescue efforts.
Many trials and tribulations, a few pigs, and a couple of years later, Shauna and Spencer moved to a property in Novato to have more space. Now, the budding organization is helping pigs and bringing joy to the community. With plans to expand their operation, their journey is just beginning. They look forward to seeing how the rest of their story unravels.
